A Newton family was forced to flee their home Monday afternoon after a mattress caught on fire in a bedroom.
Robert Adams of 1020 S. Kansas, Lot 79, was just coming home when he said he met his daughter fleeing the house with her son.“My daughter said, ‘There is a fire in my room,’” Adams said.Adams, his wife, daughter and 3-year-old grandson escaped the house unhurt.A mattress was determined to be the source of the fire, but what started the fire was unknown at presstime.The fire was contained quickly and restricted to one room of the trailer, said Scott Metzler, Newton Fire/EMS Department battalion chief.The damage is estimated at $3,000.
