Swimming lessons — Second session starts June 20 — For all ages. Group classes offer eight levels of instruction. Lessons can be taken at the Newton Activity Center Pool or the Newton Municipal Pool. The center has planned a wide variety of activities planned, including swimming, library days, craft projects, Adventure Day trips and more for children ages 5 through 12. The program is a state-licensed day care and an SRS-approved program. Discovery camp will participate in the summer food program. Registration packets and medical release forms are required and are available at the Newton Activity Center front desk.

Toddler Gym Time — 10 to 10:45 a.m. Thursdays, June 9 through June 30. Let your toddler have fun while working on his or her listening skills. Participants will use balls, parachutes and silliness in this class. For ages 18 months through 4 years.
New class, Camp Cuisine — 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 13 through 17. Does your child like to hang out in the kitchen and help you cook? This new camp will expose children to food preparation, cooking instruction and table presentation. Each day is filled with kid friendly cooking projects and taste testing. A field trip to Prairie Harvest and participant-made cookbook are included. Friday includes a lunch for parents made by the participants. For ages 9 through 12 years old.
Challenger Sports British Soccer Camp — June 13 through 17. Skill levels and confidence will blossom following a week of individual footwork drills, fundamental technical practices and coached competitive play — all woven around a central theme of respect, responsibility, integrity, sportsmanship and leadership delivered with a captivating British twist. Drawing With Shapes — 9 to 10 a.m. June 13 through 17. Learn techniques using shapes to draw almost anything. Each day will begin with directed drawings and instructions and will conclude with students choosing their own subjects and applying what they have learned. We will use a variety of drawing media, including pencil, ink, pastel and more. For ages 5 to 8 years old. Instructor: Beth Burns.
Drawing for Beginners — 1 to 2:30 p.m. June 13 through 17. Participants will be focusing on different drawing techniques, art elements, and famous artist each day and will transfer that learning to create works of our own. Participants will learn about shading, perspective, human proportion, tricks artists know, and more. Participants will focus on pencil drawing but will also experiment with markers, ink, and watercolor. For ages 9–12 years old. Instructor: Beth Burns.
Polymer Clay Fun — 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. June 13 through 17 for ages 5 to 8 and 3 to 4:30 p.m. June 13 through 17 for ages 9 to12. Participants will experiment and play with polymer clay to make sculptures, beads, gift items and more.Instructor: Beth Burns.
Basic Sign Language —5 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays, June 14 through July 5. Join Adrian and Tanya Buentello to learn a new language that is fun and easy. Participants will learn basic signs for everyday life. Start talking in a new language the first day.
Toddler Sign Language — 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays, June 14 through July 5. Learn ways to communicate with your growing child. Show your child new ways to communicate. Toddler sign language is fun and easy to learn. For ages 2 through 4 years old with parent. Instructor: Tanya Buentello.
Baby Sign Language — 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, June 14 through July 5. Parents come and learn fun and proven ways to communicate early with your child. This class will teach you ways to understand the needs and wants of your baby. This is a great class for parents, grandparents, sitters and anyone who wants to communicate with your children. Instructor: Tanya Buentello.
Munchkin Tennis — 9 to 9:45 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays, June 20 through June 30. Participants join high school and college tennis players for instructional tennis lessons. NRC provides racquets and balls. For ages 4 to 6 and ages 7 to 9.
Youth Tennis – 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Monday - Thursdays, June 20 – June 30. Participants will learn various tennis fundamentals through instruction and match play. Participants must provide their own racquet. NRC provides balls. For ages 10-12 and ages 13-14.
Art Camp – 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Monday - Friday, June 27 – July 1 for ages 5-8 and 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Monday - Friday, June 27 – July 1 for ages 9-12. Plan to experiment and learn with a different art form each day, from paper mache to polymer clay, drawing to painting and more! Instructor: Beth Burns.
Altered Books, Artist Trading Cards, and Art Journaling – 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, June 27 – July 1. This class will explore using art to express yourself in a creative journal or in art works to be shared or traded with other artists. We will use recycled materials for some of our work and will focus on collage. For ages 12 and up. Instructor: Beth Burns.
NRC offers Land and Water Fitness Classes - First Session FREE for all water or land fitness classes taught by NRC instructors. Everyone is invited to try a class. Call 283-7330 for class times.
Take Control With Exercise - Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program – 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays. Developed by physical therapists specifically for arthritis, this low-impact exercise-based program uses gentle activities to help increase joint flexibility and range of motion and helps maintain muscle strength. This program also helps increase overall stamina. Taught by Fred Saab, Certified Arthritis Foundation Instructor. Scholarships available.
FREE Senior Swim – 1 to 2 p.m. weekdays. Senior swim is free and open to all over the age of 55. The water temperature is kept between 86 and 89 degrees.
Free Open Gym - Anyone may bring a basketball and shoot some hoops in NRC's gymnasium during business hours.
Climate-controlled indoor walking track - The NRC Gym has a walking track (12 laps equal one mile) which is available for walking at anytime during business hours. Use of the track is free.
