Birders are eager to catch a glimpse of a pair of eagles that have taken up residence near a Wichita shopping center.
It’s the first time in memory a pair of bald eagles have built a nest within Wichita’s city limits. Wildlife officials confirmed their existence shortly before Christmas.
Spectators haven’t scared off the eagles. But wildlife officials are cautioning it takes patience to see them.
The director of the Great Plains Nature Center, Bob Gress, said the birds aren’t hanging around the nest all the time.
Some birders have reported they have seen the birds mate. But Gress says it’s too soon to know whether that’s true or whether eggs have been laid.
About 75 percent of bald eagle eggs in Kansas are laid in February.
