On Monday, Hesston Wellness Center director Jason Jones could be spotted showing some University of Kansas pride with a “Rock Chalk Jayhawk” T-shirt and crimson and blue dyed hair.
However, Jones warned this would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The avid Kansas State University fan dyed his hair only as part of a special Wellness Center promotion that sought to recruit 100 new members in January.
“I’m actually a K-State graduate, so I’m far from a KU fan,” he said with a laugh.
The promotion worked and the center ended up surpassing its goal, with 125 new and renewed members signed up.
“There’s a lot of KU fans in this area,” Jones said. “Some of them said they were joining just to see me color my hair.”
Jones came up with the idea after emailing his staff and asking for suggestions of incentives the Wellness Center could offer to people to encourage them to become members.
In addition to Jones dying his hair, the center also celebrated with a potluck to which the entire community of Hesston was invited.
Jones said he was pleased with the promotion’s results, and he is excited about the center’s new members.
The center now has more than 1,300 members, and Jones said the center is proud to help people pursue a healthier lifestyle through exercising.
“Overall, there’s just a lot of people, not just in our area, but all over that struggle with weight issues and a number of different health issues that can be impacted in a positive way by being more physically active,” he said.
And he said encouraging community members to be more active was certainly worth it — even if it meant dying his hair KU colors for a day.
“It’s been a whole lot of fun,” he said. “It truly has been an entire staff effort, and an entire community effort, to make this promotion successful.”
About the center
All group exercise programs, including water exercise and group fitness classes are free with a membership, and facilities include a heated indoor pool and hot tub, fitness room with weight machines and cardio equipment, indoor walking track, library, painting studio, pottery studio and more.
Children up to the age of 13 years old are included free on their parent’s membership. Discounts are available for corporate memberships and for annual memberships.
The promotion for February is $2 Tuesdays, which allows non-members to come in for $2 every Tuesday this month.
The center also offers a 12-week personalized fitness program, which begins with a consultation with a trainer to determine personal wellness goals. The next step is a fitness evaluation, which measures baseline fitness levels. This information is used by the trainer to design a personalized fitness program to help members attain their wellness goals. They have three separate one-on-one sessions with a personal trainer, and at the end of the 12 weeks, they will do another fitness evaluation to show them the progress they have made in 12 weeks.
The center is at 701 S. Main St. in Hesston. For more information, call (620) 327-2323.
