Explore standing poses, hip-openers, seated poses, twists, backbends, basic inversions and breathing exercises on deepening levels as you gain experience and skill. Discovery Camp — 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays through Aug. 18. The center has planned a variety of activities including swimming, library days, craft projects, Adventure Day trips and more for children ages 5 through 12. The program is a state-licensed day care and a Social and Rehabilitation Services-approved program. Discovery camp will participate in the summer food program. Registration packets and medical release forms are required and are available at the Newton Activity Center front desk.

Pre-School Play Time — 4 to 4:45 p.m. Tuesdays, Aug. 10 through 31. Let your 3 to 6-year-old’s imagination come alive in this Play Time Fiesta. Participants will play games, do arts and crafts and play with parachutes, as well as other activities. Parents are welcome to participate. Sign your child up for one day or all days.
Line Dancing (Linercise) — 6 to 7 p.m. Thursdays, Aug. 12 through Sept. 30. Join the NRC and Knox Rhine for this fiesta for your feet. Rhine has been dancing for many years recreationally and competitively. He has been an instructor and choreographer almost as long as he’s been dancing, and he has been a judge at several national competitions.
Splish, Splash Back to School Bash — 7 to 10 p.m. Friday. For those entering sixth, seventh and eighth grades. Attend for an evening of swimming, music, friends, games and snacks as we say goodbye to summer and hello to school.
Pooches’ Plunge — 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 21. Dogs are invited to swim on the last day water will be in the pool. Prizes and treats will be given out to the dogs. All dogs must pass a temperament test and have all required city tags.
Jazz/Hip Hop Dance — 2 to 3 p.m. Sundays, Aug. 22 through Sept. 19. Join Lexi Coffey for this program. Classes will concentrate on introductory skills and fundamentals. No experience is required. For ages 7 and older. Registration deadline is Aug. 19.
Couples Two Step–West Coast Swing — 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays, Aug. 26 through Sept. 30. Grab a partner and join Knox Rhine in this six-week class. Couples will learn basic steps for West Coast Swing. Registration deadline is Aug. 20.
Karate — 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. This class teaches the style of Okinawan Shorin-Ryu, which emphasizes character building through progressive curriculum and training methods. The student learns self defense techniques, Kata, one- or two-person drills and controlled sparring. Instructor: Allen Makovec.

Tae Kwon Do Beginner’s Class — 6 to 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. This class emphasizes developing basic Tae Kwon Do kicks, stances, blocks, strikes and forms. Introduction to sparring and the tenets of Tae Kwon Do also are included. Instructor: Dany Monares.
Tae Kwon Do Intermediate and Advanced Class — 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. This class is designed for children and adults at the intermediate through advanced levels of Tae Kwon Do. This class emphasizes a vast array of Tae Kwon Do skills, intermediate to advanced kicks and combinations, along with a variety of hand techniques and forms consistent with one’s rank. Self-defense attack and counter attack techniques, joint locks and manipulations as well as sparring are also taught. Instructor: Dany Monares.
Municipal Pool Public Swim Hours — 1 to 5 p.m. daily; 7 to 9 p.m. weekdays; Saturday and Sunday evenings are available for rental by groups. Last day for public swimming is Aug. 18.
Summer activity center pool public swim hours — Noon to 1 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays; 7:30 to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturdays.
Free open gym — Anyone may bring a basketball and shoot some hoops in NRC’s gymnasium during business hours.
Climate-controlled indoor walking track — The NRC Gym has a walking track (12 laps equal one mile) is available for walking at anytime during business hours. Use of the track is free.
