State offers mercury collection

The state of Kansas has implemented a program to try to remove potentially toxic mercury from the Kansas environment.

People can bring elemental mercury or items that contain mercury, such as thermometers, barometers, manometers, mercury displacement relays, heating/cooling thermostats, mercury switches and medical devices, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays to the Harvey County Transfer Station, 3205 S.W. 24th St., Newton.

There is no charge for disposal from residents and facilities generating less than 55 pounds (25 kg) of hazardous waste per month.
