Sumner Regional Medical Center (SRMC) has received high marks in a public perception survey from the residents of Sumner County and the city of Wellington. The purpose of the survey was to inform the medical center about its community perception and to assess the market potential of increased public support.

Two surveys — one via mail and one face to face with members of the community — were conducted in the fall of 2011 by marketing and advertising firm Armstrong|Shank and Wichita State University’s Center for Economic Development and Business Research, W. Frank Barton School of Business. Jeremy Hill, research analyst for the Center, indicated that the high number of respondents bodes well for the medical center.

“We have found that surveys of this nature and scope usually bring in a 3–4 percent response from participants,” said Hill. “The SRMC surveys received a response rate higher than 10 percent. Clearly, the results show that the community has a positive perception of Sumner Regional Medical Center.”

With 85 percent of the respondents living in Wellington, the vast majority — nearly 90 percent — had a positive perception of the hospital and its impact on both Wellington and the surrounding areas. Naming the local resource that provides the most value to the community, respondents tied SRMC with the Wellington Public Schools — far surpassing other suggested resources. Finally, both surveys show that the majority of the respondents are aware of most services provided by SRMC, and more than 75 percent approve increasing public finance of SRMC.

Bob Leftwich, board of trustees chairman of the SRMC Endowment Foundation, said, “The City leaders should be applauded for their caring role and leadership in maintaining quality health care for the region. They assisted in placing the survey in the hands of area residences and supported our efforts.

“The public’s perception of the hospital reflected a very positive 70+ percent,” Leftwich added. “And more than 70 percent indicated that they would support increased public finance of SRMC. These two questions are key to the direction of health care in Sumner County.”

Employing 158 people, Sumner Regional Medical Center is a city-owned hospital serving primarily Sumner County. The 80-bed hospital is one of the leading health care providers in South Central

Kansas, offering advanced imaging capabilities, level 3 maternity care, cancer care, general surgery, residential care, short-term rehab and a variety of other inpatient and outpatient hospital services.
