As a part of the celebrations for the 140th birthday year of Dodge City, a new tradition was kicked off Thursday morning. Community members, representatives from the Drovers, the Dodge City Convention and Visitors Bureau, the city and Main Street, along with a few members of the media, were on hand to see if El Capitan saw his shadow.
Brent Harris from Boot Hill Museum served as the officiating cowboy. When the cloudy morning did not show El Capitan's shadow, Harris consulted the longhorn and announced Dodge City would have an early spring by reading the following:
"A proclamation from our Longhorn Dodge Citian/For folks West of the 100th Meridian:/An early Spring is Proclaimed,/But please Pray for more Rain/So a new Season of Drought is forbid again."
