Kansas Wesleyan faced its stiffest test of the season when it took Avila, a battle of the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the Newton Kansan/GateHouse Kansas KCAC Football Power Poll.

And tested they were. The Coyotes were forced to rally from behind in the second half to collect a 34-31 home win over Avila to salt away the league championship.

Kansas Wesleyan has moved up to No. 6 in the NAIA coaches poll. Ottawa leapfrogged Avila at No. 21, while Avila checks in at 22. In the power poll, Avila retained the No. 2 spot while Ottawa sits at No. 3.

Kansas Wesleyan will put the final touches on the regular season with a trip to Southwestern this weekend. Avila will host Tabor.

Friends University is a team on the move, winning back-to-back games and three of its last four games to move from No. 11 to No. 8 in the power poll. This week the Falcons travel to Ottawa to end the season.

Conference player to watch

Senior quarterback Brennan Whitaker of Friends University is finishing off his football career with a strong showing — earning conference player of the week honors twice this season, including this week after guiding the Falcons to their third win of the year.

Whitaker finished the home portion of his career with one of his best games, throwing for 331 yards and four touchdowns in the Falcons' 38-20 victory over Bethel College Nov. 5. His first Player of the Week honor this season came following career-best marks of 386 passing yards and five touchdown passes in a 48-34 victory over Bethany College Oct. 6.

Despite missing three games with an injury, Whitaker ranks fifth in the KCAC in total passing yards (1909) and fourth in touchdown passes (19).
