McPHERSON — The Bethel College women’s basketball team is off to a 4-0 start for the first time at least since before the 2003-04 season after a 72-64 win over Central Christian College.

It was Bethel’s seventh straight win dating back to last season. The Threshers beat the Tigers for the 16th straight time.

Bethel led by as many as eight in the first quarter. The Tigers cut the lead to five at the end of the period, 15-10.

Bethel took a 20-12 lead in the first 33 seconds of the second quarter, but gave up an 11-0 run. Bethel closed out the half on a 5-0 run to lead 30-27.

Bethel led by 14 at the end of the third quarter, 53-39. Leading by 21 with 2:25 left in the game, Bethel gave up a 15-2 run, but held on for the win.

The Threshers finished the game 24 of 59 from the field (40.7 percent), while Central was 25 of 69 (32.6 percent). Bethel outscored Central 17-8 from the free throw line.

Bethel held a 59-27 rebounding advantage, led by Karlie Schroeder with 11. Bethel did manage to overcome 30 turnovers.

Freshman Kendall Michalski scored 20 points. Michalski hit six 3-point shots to tie a school record. Abby Schmidt scored 13 points. Halstead High grad Kayla Newman scored 10 points.

Central, 0-3, was led by Piper Kalthoff with 16 points, Mycah McDonald with 15 points and Tania Lowe with 13 points.

Monday, Bethel lost an 89-36 exhibition to NCAA Division II Emporia State, which received votes in the pre-season poll.

Bethel trailed 21-7 after the first quarter, 45-15 at the half and 67-25 after three quarters.

Tyra Jones led the Hornets with 16 points, followed by Emily Miller with 14, Addie Lackie with 13 and Tre’Zure Jobe with 11.

Alex Bearup led Bethel with nine points, followed by Michalski with eight points and Schmidt with seven points and nine rebounds.

Bethel plays at 6 p.m. Monday at Manhattan Christian. The Thunder are 1-0 after a 92-32 win over Union College (Neb.).
