WICHITA — A pair of Bethel College basketball players took the first Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week awards for the week of Oct. 29 to Nov. 4.

Bethel sophomore Abby Schmidt, a 6-foot-3 sophomore from Newton, was named the women’s offensive and defensive player of the week.

In three Bethel wins, Schmidt averaged 15.7 points, 12.3 rebounds, .7 blocks and .7 steals a game. Her stats included a 20-point, 20-rebound game against Oklahoma Panhandle State.

She claimed player of the week honors seven times last season — twice on offense and five times on defense.

Bethel freshman Jaylon Scott was named the men’s defensive player of the week. In three Bethel wins, Scott averaged 17.3 points, 10.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.7 blocks and 1.0 steals a game.

Scott is a 6-4 guard from Allen, Texas.

G2 Heat 14U

The G2 Heat 14U-Lang squad finished 3-2 in a tournament last weekend.

The team opened play with a 9-0 win over the Blitz 14B. Addy Mueller struck out three in three innings. Brookelyn Barnett, Allyson Lange and Amber Smith each had two hits and two RBIs.

The Heat lost to the Bullets 14C 5-3. Amie Yoder had three hits. Piper Seidl had two hits. Lange struck out two in 4.1 innings.

The Heat beat the KC Phoenix Fire 14C 7-3. Mueller struck out seven in five innings. Emily Wedel had two hits and two RBIs. Seidl and Smith each added two hits.

The Heat beat the Yellowjackets 20-0. Lange struck out two in four innings. Carly Willhelm had four hits and six RBIs. Barnett had two hits and four RBIs. Lange had three hits. Jillian George drove in two runs.

The Heat ended play with a 14-6 loss to the Bullets 14C. Mueller had two strikeouts. Barnett had two hits.

Thunder makes

WICHITA — The Wichita Thunder announced several player moves.

Goaltender Stuart Skinner has been assigned to Wichita from Bakersfield of the American Hockey League by parent club Edmonton. Forward John McFarland has been recalled to Bakersfield.

Skinner is a rookie and a third-round pick by Edmonton in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. He started the season with Wichita, going 3-0-0 with a 2.53 goals-against-average and a .928 save percentage. In two games with Bakersfield, he was 1-1-0 with a 3.04 gaa and a .880 save percentage.

McFarland is a seven-year pro, including three games with the Florida Panthers of the NHL in the 2015-16 season. In five games with Wichita, he scored two assists. He also played in two games with Bakersfield to start the season.

Wichita acquired defenseman Zach Todd from the Orlando Solar Bears for future considerations.

Todd made his pro debut last year in four games with the Atlanta Gladiators after four years at NCAA Division I Mercyhurst College of the Atlantic Hockey Association.

He scored a goal with Atlanta last year. In three games with Orlando this season, he has a goal with an assist.

Defenseman Kevin Patterson has been played on team suspension to allow him to play for the Peoria Rivermen of the Class A Southern Professional Hockey League. Patterson is a second-year pro. He played 19 games with Wichita last year, scoring a goal with six assists. In 27 games with Peoria last year, he scored 12 assists. Patterson hasn’t played a game this season.

He played four years with Niagara University of the AHA.

THUNDER FALLS TO UTAH — The Wichita Thunder fell to the Utah Grizzlies 5-4 Wednesday morning in ECHL play at INTRUST Bank Arena.

Jake Marchment scored the game winner with 1:55 remaining in regulation. Marchment finished the game with two goals. Nolan De Jong scored a goal with an assist. Tim McGauley and Caleb Herbert each added a goal. Kevin Davis, Ryan Misiak and Ryan Walters each had two assists.

Matt Schmalz scored a goal with an assist for Wichita. Travis Brown, Ralph Cuddemi and Steven Iacobellis each added a goal.

Wichita was outshot 40-23. Stuart Skinner had 35 saves in goal for Wichita. Joe Cannata had 19 saves for Utah.

Utah improves to 6-1-3, while Wichita drops to 3-2-3. Wichita hosts Utah again at 7:05 p.m. Friday.
