LINDSBORG — The Halstead High School boys’ cross country team claimed the team title of the Central Kansas League Championships Thursday in Lindsborg, while the Dragon girls took third.

The Hesston boys took second in the team standings.

In the girls’ team standings, Pratt won with a score of 33. Smoky Valley was second at 37 and Halstead at 54. Six other teams didn’t have five runners to score.

Halstead won the boys’ title at 38 points. Hesston scored 50 and Pratt scored 54.

“Because of the recent rains, the site of the 2018 CKL Cross Country Meet was moved from the Lindsborg Golf Course, to the walking trail nestled in and along the Smoky Hill River on the south side of the city of Lindsborg,” Halstead coach Curtis Vermillion said. “It was a beautiful wooded area with an old historic bridge being the centerpiece. Temperatures were in the low 50’s, with overcast skies and very little wind. Conditions that many would consider ideal for distance running. Truly a great day to run! As in past, years, the CKL cross country meet is a tough meet. There were some excellent individual and team performances. The atmosphere was exciting, and should get everyone in the right frame of mind for the regional meet next week.”

The Halstead boys were led by Joshua Talbott, who won the race in 17:09.2, winning by 3.7 seconds over Braydon Lothman of Larned. Nathan Kolm of Pratt was third at 17:16.12.

Other Halstead medalists were Hayden Davis in sixth at 17:28.1, Dawson Driskill in eighth at 17:58.5, Gage Carr in 14th in 18:13.9 and Sebastian Horn in 17th in 18:16.7.

Hesston medalists include James Peters in seventh in 17:57.6, Jeb Carlson in eighth in 17:59.4, Johnny Yang in 12th in 18:04.9, Jimmy Yang in 15th in 18:15.2, Joey Kueker in 16th in 18:16.2 and Carter Funk in 19th in 18:27.9.

In the girls’ race, Addie Hoeme of Pratt topped teammate Sian Helrich for the win. Hoeme finished in 20:10.2. Helfrich finished in 20:28.0. Ellise Peterson of Smoky Valley was third in 21:01.9.

Halstead medalists include Parker Schroeder in fifth in 21:14.1, Kaia Siebert in seventh in 21:44.9 and Lydia Johnson in 18th in 23:22.9.

“Overall, we were pleased with the performance,” Vermillion said. “The boys came home as CKL champions, and the girls placed third. We ran hard, competed well, and many of our runners had personal best times for the year. Congratulation to Pratt girls as they ran well and are deserving of their CKL title.

“We are getting closer to having everyone healthy. We hope the boys and girls can both build on this meet, and run well next weekend at the Regional meet located at Lake Afton. The boys race will begin at 10:55 AM, with the girls to follow at 12:15 PM. Every regional meet brings out the best in the state. We are hoping to run well and achieve our goal of qualifying for state. In addition, we would like to peak at the proper time.”

Both Halstead and Hesston compete in the Class 3A regionals Oct. 20 at Lake Afton. The top three teams and top five runners not on the top three teams advance to state Oct. 27 at Rim Rock Farms.
