MARION — The Goessel High School cross country team swept the Marion Invitational cross country meet Tuesday at the Marion Country Club.
The Goessel girls topped Remington 43-47. The Goessel boys downed Ell-Saline 51-74.
“The focus for this meet was opposite of last Thursday as I challenged the runners to start slower, and then work on surging at the end and passing people in the last mile,” Goessel coach Brian Lightner said. “This course is one of the more challenging courses we have in our regular season and I want to develop the mindset of competing all the way to the end of the race. A couple of the schools use this meet as a JV meet so it is usually a great place for our kids to place well. I am pleased with how they progressed through the race and many told me how many people they passed within the last mile. Ben Olson passed so many he lost track of how many he did. We are halfway through our competitive season with three more meets until regionals. We hope to start putting complete races together and have our times drop as the temperatures drop.”
The Goessel girls were led by Elsie Clark, who placed seventh in 24:14.1; and Elyse Boden, who finished 14th in 26:24.9.
Medalists for the Goessel boys were Dawson Duerksen, who finished ninth in 20:07.4; Jerah Schmidt, who finished 10th in 20:22.0; Brendon Hicks, who placed 13th in 20:57.4; and Jacob Schrag, who finished 17th in 21:03.1.
