Jayhawk honors

COLBY — Colby Community College freshman volleyball player Kyndal Bacon, a Newton High grad, was named the Jayhawk Conference West setter of the week for the second straight week.

In six matches, all wins, Bacon had 195 assists in 20 sets. She had 14 blocks and 24 kills.

Colby is 13-0, 4-0 in Jayhawk West play.

Newton, Berean

compete at Buhler

BUHLER — The Newton High School girls’ cross country team finished fourth, followed by Berean Academy in fifth Thursday at the Buhler Invitational.

In the boys’ competition, Newton was fourth and Berean finished seventh.

There were 12 teams in competition.

The highest area finisher in the girls’ race was Erin Topham of Berean, who finished third in 21:38.8. Newton’s Alaina Stucky was fourth in 21:44.5. Brooke Wiebe of Berean was sixth in 22:03.5.

Top area finishers for the boys were Erik Jantz of Newton in fifth in 18:03.6. Noah Massanari of Newton was 13th in 18:37.0.

Newton competes Sept. 22 at the Rim Rock Classic at Rim Rock Farm outside of Lawrence.

Berean competes Tuesday at the Southeast of Saline Invitational.

BENNINGTON — The Goessel High School boys’ cross country team placed third Thursday at the Bennington Invitational.

Goessel was led by Dawson Duerksen in ninth at 18:50.5. Jerah Schmidt was 15th in 19:17.9. Jacob Schrag placed 20th in 19:56.4.

The Goessel girls had just four runners compete, one shy of a team score. Elsie Clark was seventh in 22:08.0. Elyse Boden was 15th in 24:13.9.

Goessel competes Tuesday at the Marion Invitational at the Marion Country Club.
