STERLING — Wet weather was not enough to stop the Bethel College harriers from turning in quality performances Saturday at the Warrior Cross Country Invitational hosted by Sterling College at the Sterling Country Club.
Angus Siemens (jr., Newton) and Natalie Graber (fr., Divide, Colo.) set personal bests over 8K and 5K respectively and Bethany Montoya (sr., Red Oak, Texas) just missed hers.
Siemens, running for the first time as a Thresher, knocked one minute off his previous best.
"He started the race a little quickly but was able to maintain his composure and finish the race strong," Bethel coach Jeff Hoskisson said.
After a relatively fast opening mile, Siemens was able to maintain his rhythm over the next three loops of the course.
"Angus really did a good job of battling through the middle of the race," Hoskisson said. "After a quick start he was able to fight through the middle part of the race to set himself up for a good finish."
Siemens, who ran in the top-25 all race used a strong finish to cover the 8k course in 29.00.2 and finish 21st.
Graber and Montoya started the race conservatively. Graber coming through the first mile in the top 30 with Montoya not far back.
"We wanted them both to be under control in the first mile," Hoskisson said. "Natalie was a little quicker than last week but did so more comfortably. Bethany executed her first mile just like we wanted her to. She has had a problem in the past with going out to fast but today she nailed it. She ran exactly the way we wanted her to."
Through the middle part of the race, both ladies were able to maintain their positions.
"Both ladies ran really well in the middle of the race," Hoskisson said. "Natalie was able to maintain her rhythm this week instead of falling back like last week. Bethany did a great job of keeping her pace where she was supposed to."
Both runners were able to pass people over the last mile and finish strong with Graber running 21:41.5 for 30th and Montoya running 24:14.30 to place 48th.
The Threshers are off this next week before coming home for the Muthama-Rogers Invitational on the Bethel Cross Country Course on September 22. That race will begin at 10 a.m. with the women's 5k. The men's 8k will go off at 10:45 a.m.
