One person died after a two-vehicle accident Sept. 8 on U.S. Highway 50 near Halstead.

The incident occurred around 6:45 a.m. on U.S. 50 between Hertzler and Halstead roads — the result of a collision between a sport utility vehicle and semi.

A female passenger in the SUV , Darlene Turnbull, 73, of Vermillion was killed. The driver of the SUV, Max Turnbull Jr., 77, Vermillion, was taken to a Wesley Medical Center in critical condition. A driver and passenger in the semi were not injured.

The Turnbulls were traveling to the Kansas State Fair.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the Acadia driven by Max Turnbull crossed the center line and drove into the eastbound lanes. The semi was traveling east on U.S. Highway 50 and to avoid striking the Acadia, crossed the center line and drove into the westbound lanes. Turnbull then drove back into the westbound lane and collided with the semi. The Acadia came to rest on the south shoulder and the semi came to rest in the north ditch.

Traffic was diverted off U.S. 50 as first responders worked the incident.
