Sedgwick tops

Remington

SEDGWICK — The Sedgwick Cardinals opened the season with a 46-6 win over the Remington Broncos Friday night in Heart of America League play in Sedgwick.

Sedgwick spoils the debut of incoming Remington coach Simon McKee.

Colton Smith rushed for 83 yards and three touchdowns for the Cardials. Hooper Schroeder hit 31 of 51 passes for 502 yards and two touchdowns. Cauy Root hit the sole pass he threw for 55 yards and a score. Root also caught a pass for a score.

Kale Schroeder had six catches for 161 yards and a touchdown. Mason Lacey had seven catches for 125 yards. Gavin Fitch had five catches for 118 yards and a score.

Sedgwick led 26-0 at the half.

Weston Sommers scored for Remington on a 54-yard run.

Sedgwick plays Friday at Wichita Independent. Remington plays Friday at Ell-Saline.

HESSTON — The Hesston College women’s soccer team dropped a pair of games in recent days.

Friday, Hesston fell to North Iowa Area Community College 2-1 in overtime. Sunday, Hesston fell to Neosho County Community College 4-0.

Jessica Altman scored for North Iowa on a penalty kick one minute into the overtime for the game winner. Rylie Smith scored for North Iowa in the 32nd minute with an assist from Altman.

Hesston scored in the 80th minute on a goal by Miya Gonda with an assist from Sarah Keck.

Hesston was outshot 9-6. Lucy Robinson had five saves for NIACC. Vivi Rodriguez had seven saves for Hesston.

In Sunday’s game, Jailene Alarcon and Savannah Moberly each scored two goals for Neosho. Evelyn Navarro had two assists.

Hesston was outshot 32-2, 17-2 on goal. Rodriguez had 13 saves for Hesston. Autumn Wilson and Kimberly Gamez each had a save for Neosho.

HESSTON — The Hesston College men’s soccer team fell to Neosho Community College 7-0 Sunday in Hesston.

The Larks trailed 3-0 at the half.

Alfie Belcher had two goals for Neosho. Alexandre Novas, Victor Hernandez, Eduardo Carvalho, Allec Medina and Stefan Jakovljevic each added a goal. Hesston was outshot 21-8.

Wingnuts win

final game

WICHITA — The Wichita Wingnuts won the final game scheduled for Lawrence-Dumont Stadium 4-1 over the Sioux City Explorers Monday afternoon at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

The crowd of 5,567 was the team’s best of the season.

Wichita’s Tyler Kane (7-3) tossed seven innings for the win, allowing a run on five hits with a walk and a strikeout. Steve Pastora and Casey Harmon each tossed an inning with a strikeout. Harmon posted the save.

Zach Nehrir drove in two runs. Chase Simpson went three for four with an RBI. Nick Rotola also drove in a run on a solo home run. Leo Watkins went two for two hitting.

Dominic Topoozian (1-1) went the distance for the Explorers, allowing four runs, 11 hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Dylan Kelly went two for three with an RBI.

Wichita ends the season 61-39. Sioux City is 71-29, winning the American Association South, and plays the Kansas City T-Bones in a best-of-five playoff series this week.
