NICKERSON — For a while Friday night, it seemed neither team wanted to win its first game of the season.

Mistakes by both teams made a long night for coaches on the sidelines. For Halstead, turnovers kept them from keeping their offense on the field. For Nickerson, penalties kept the offense moving the ball in the wrong direction.

Finally, Scott Grider scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, leading Halstead to a 22-7 come-front behind victory.

"We were really fortunate to come away with the win, the way we played," Halstead coach Jason Grider said.

Scott Grider, one of Jason's two sons, broke a punt return 60 yards and added a 19-yard touchdown run in the final two minutes to seal a win.

Still, Nickerson led until the final eight minutes, forcing seven turnovers. But the penalties on offense plagued the Panthers in John Wellman's coaching debut for Nickerson.

"If you get that many turnovers, you should win," Wellman said. "But we just made too many mistakes and ended up with 70 yards total offense. You can't win like that."

An illegal block almost kept Nickerson off the scoreboard, calling back a touchdown run by Tanner Schrag late in the second quarter and bringing groans from the home crowd.

But the Panthers made a tough second effort. Schrag connected on a 16-yard pass on the next play to Kaleb Jackson, who hauled in the ball with a diving catch deep in the end zone to tie the score as time expired.

Kyle Elliott kicked the extra point to give Nickerson the 7-6 halftime lead. Schrag’s 15-yard run on fourth down kept the late half drive alive. Noah Salazar then took at 8-yard pass to put the Panthers in striking distance.
