BUHLER — The Newton High School football team took a four-touchdown lead early in the second quarter and held on for a 34-26 win over Buhler Friday night at Buhler Stadium.

Newton’s defense posted three turnovers, while Buhler forced two.

Colton Davis had 20 carries for 144 yards and three touchdowns. Davis also hit 14 of 27 passes with two interceptions for 90 yards.

“I was really proud of the way the kids hung in there,” Newton coach Chris Jaax said. “We weren’t just going to go in here and roll over Buhler. They are too good a team. We faced some adversity today and we came through it. We were about to go up 35-7 before the half and had a turnover that was a real momentum changer. At the same time, we made a lot of mistakes — a lot of missed assignments, some penalties like lining up in the neutral zone and forward motion and illegal formation. We have some things to work on.”

“I was so proud of the way the kids came back and hung in there,” Buhler coach Steve Warner said. “We could have rolled over and died tonight. We kept fighting back until the end. We made some stops late that kept us in the game. We had one right there at the end, we just couldn’t get our two-minute offense going.”

Colton Goans led Buhler, hitting 13 of 27 passes for 153 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Austin Gentry had two catches for a touchdown and added a third on an interception.

Buhler fumbled its first play of the game, setting up a 19-yard Davis run. Isaiah Presley then returned a punt 60 yards for a score.

Newton drove the ball early in the second quarter, scoring on a two-yard Davis run. On Buhler’s next play from scrimmage, Matt Seirer intercepted a pass and returned it 24 yards for the touchdown.

Buhler finished a 40-yard drive late in the first half with a 14-yard pass from Goans to Briggam McCurdy. Newton turned the ball over two plays later on a Cade Miller interception, but Newton got the ball back after four straight incomplete passes.

With 11 seconds left in the half, Gentry intercepted a pass and returned it 88 yards for a Buhler touchdown.

Newton held a 147-68 advantage in total offense in the first half.

Each team opened the third quarter with a long drive resulting in a touchdown. Newton scored on a 38-yard Davis run. Buhler scored on an eight-yard pass from Goans to Gentry. Buhler’s extra-point kick was blocked. Buhler’s drive was extended by a pair of major Newton penalties.

Newton had a long drive end on downs at the Buhler 23. Another Newton drive ended at the 32, where the Crusaders needed just five plays to score on a five-yard pass from Goans to Gentry with 7:22 in regulation. After a pair of late defensive stops by Buhler in the fourth quarter, Newton’s Nick Antonowich picked off a with under a minute to play to effectively end the game.

Newton returns home at 7 p.m. Friday to face Campus. Buhler plays El Dorado next week.

“Campus is very good,” Jaax said. “They had Derby down at halftime last year.”

“El Dorado has a lot of starters coming back,” Warner said.
