The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference football season will begin this week, though three teams played nonconference games to start their individual seasons.

The Newton Kansan and Gatehouse Media papers in Kansas are launching a KCAC Football Power Poll for the 2018 season. Writers who cover the KCAC will be asked to rank teams on a weekly basis.

Sterling will open the poll in the top position.

Of the three teams opening their season in nonconference action, Southwestern notched the only win — thumping Graceland 76-14. Senior quarterback Christian Gordon threw three touchdowns against one interception on 14-of-30 passing and 188 yards for the Moundbuilders. He also rushed seven times for 14 yards and a touchdown. This week he will lead the Moundbuilders in a matchup against Friends.

The ESPN3 KCAC game of the week Saturday will be live from North Newton, where Bethel College will host Ottawa and dedicate new turf for Joe Goering Field.
