DERBY — The Newton High School girls’ golf team opened the season with an eighth-place finish Monday at the Derby Invitational at the Derby Golf and Country Club.

Andover won the team title at 170, followed by Winfield at 199 and Maize at 212. Newton had a team score of 265.

Tiffany Chan of Andover was top medalist at 40. Emma Johnson of Derby, Shauna Lee of Andover and Alivia Nguyen of Andover all finished three strokes back at 43.

Newton was led by Mallory Seirer, who shot a 59. Naomi Kuhn shot a 66. Alondra Valle and Brynna Walton each shot a 70.

“We had two players withdraw during the meet, so everyone's score counted. We had some tough holes, with big numbers that drove up our scores. We will be focusing on consistency in practice to prepare for our next meet.”

Newton competes at the Salina Central Invitational Tuesday at the Salina Municipal Golf Course.

Wichita cooks

KC T-Bones

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The Wichita Wingnuts opened a three-game series with the Kansas City T-Bones with a 6-3 win Wednesday night at T-Bones Stadium in American Association play.

Wichita improves to 59-36, one half game behind the T-Bones for second place in the AA South. Kansas City drops to 59-35. Wichita has five games to play, while the T-Bones have six.

Wichita jumped out with a pair of runs in the top of the first on a Zach Nehrir RBI double and an Abel Nieves RBI single.

Keith Curcio scored a run for the T-Bones with an RBI double in the second inning.

Wichita scored three runs in the fourth inning. Logan Watkins hit a two-run double. Nehrir added an RBI single.

With bases loaded in the top of the seventh, Nick Rotola was hit by a pitch to drive in a run.

Danny Hayes hit a two-run home run for the T-Bones in the bottom of the ninth.

Watkins, Nehrir and Tony Thomas all went two for four hitting for Wichita.

Travis Banwart (8-4) threw eight innings for Wichita, allowing a run on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Daniel Tillman pitched the ninth.

Todd Cunningham went two for three hitting for Kansas City. Adrian Nieto went two for four.

Jared Mortensen (4-6) threw six innings for the T-Bones, allowing five runs, eight hits, five walks and seven strikeouts. Jackson Lowery finished the game, allowing a run on one hit with three walks and three strikeouts.

The Wranglers and T-Bones meet again at 7:05 p.m. today.
