Central Kansas League
Halstead @ Nickerson
Halstead is coming off a rare losing season in recent years, finishing 4-6 last year. The Dragons were 2-4 in league play, but finished 2-1 in district play to reach the Class 3A playoffs, falling to Marion 54-30 in the first round.
Nickerson finished 7-3 last season, 4-2 in league play. The Panthers finished 3-0 in district play, including a 48-14 win over Wichita Collegiate, to reach the Class 4A, Division II playoffs. Nickerson fell to Clay Center 21-20 in the first round of the playoffs.
Under the new classification system, Nickerson drops down to Class 3A in football.
Hillsboro @ Hesston
Hesston will look to get off to a strong start to the season with a rivalry game against Hillsboro. The Swathers were 8-4 last season, overcoming a slow start to reach the Class 3A quarterfinals, losing to Phillipsburg 47-7.
Hillsboro finished 1-8 last season, losing eight straight after a 32-0 win over Lyons in the season opener.
Hesston won the match-up 41-6 last season.
Under the new classification alignment, Hillsboro drops down to Class 1A this season.
Heart of America
Sedgwick @ Remington
Week one in the Heart of America League features a rivalry game between the Sedgwick Cardinals and the Remington Broncos.
Sedgwick was 5-5 last season, 4-3 in league play, but finished unbeaten in district play. The Cardinals fell to Ell-Saline 44-41 in the first round of the Class 2-1A playoffs.
Under the new alignment for this season, Sedgwick will compete in Class 1A.
Remington debuts Simon McKee as its head coach. McKee is a former standout player at Halstead High School and Tabor College.
The Broncos were 1-8 last season, 1-6 in league play.
Sedgwick won this match-up 43-0 last year.
Wheat State League
Peabody-Burns @ Centre
Peabody-Burns will debut head coach Kody Tegtmeier, who succeeds David Pickens. The Warriors finished 2-7 overall, 1-3 in Wheat State League play and 1-4 in district play.
Centre finished 5-3 last season. Losses to Clifton-Clyde and Burlingame kept the Cougars out of the Eight-Man I playoffs.
Heart of the Plains
Skyline @ Burrton
Burrton is coming off a 1-8 campaign last season, finishing 0-5 in district play. Skyline was 2-6 last season.
Goessel @ Moundridge
The Moundridge Wildcats return to the eight-man ranks for the first time since the 1990s, facing the rival Goessel Bluebirds.
Moundridge was 2-7 last season, but two of those wins were in Class 2-1A district play. A 15-6 loss to Medicine Lodge kept the team out of the playoffs.
Goessel also finished 2-7 last year, 2-4 in district play.
The early start time is due to summer electricity usage limits at Moundridge.
