Thunder signs

two players

WICHITA — The Wichita Thunder signed a pair of players for the upcoming season — defensemen Samuel Thibault and Tyler Elbrecht.

Thibault played 43 games for Wichita last season as a rookie, posting nine assists. He added two assists in four playoff games.

Thibault also played two games for the Bakersfield Condors of the AHL.

He came to Wichita after four seasons with Baie-Comeau Drakkar of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Elbrecht is in his sixth professional season. He spent his first five in the ECHL with the Idaho Steelheads, Toledo Walleye, Greenville Swamp Rabbits, Missouri/Kansas City Mavericks, Manchester Monarchs and Cincinnati Cyclones.

He played 72 games with Kansas City last season, scoring a goal with eight assists.

In 334 pro games. Elbrecht has 12 goals with 50 assists. He has played in seven playoff games with Toledo in 2015.

Elbrecht played collegiate hockey at Minnesota State-Mankato, scoring three goals with 24 assists in 142 games. He helped lead the Mavericks to an NCAA Tournament berth in 2013.

THUNDER BENEFIT — The Wichita Thunder is hosting its ninth annual Caring For Kids Fund benefit golf tournament Oct. 22 at the Willowbend Golf Course.

The tournament is a four-player scramble.

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas — The Wichita Thunder opened a three-game road series against the Texas AirHogs with a 4-1 win Thursday night in American Association play at AirHogs Stadium.

Wichita scored in the first inning on a Tony Thomas RBI single. Texas answered in the bottom of the first on a wild pitch.

Chase Simpson put Wichita back in the lead with an RBI single in the third. Wichita scored on an error in the fourth inning. Nick Rotola hit a sacrifice fly for Wichita in the seventh.

Tyler Kane (6-3) tossed seven innings for Wichita, allowing a run, five hits, two walks and three strikeouts. Scott Kuzminsky struck out two batters in the eighth. Daniel Tillman allowed a hit with two strikeouts in the ninth for his 26th save of the season.

Leo Vargas went three for five hitting for Wichita. Simpson went two for four.

Cody White (0-4) took the loss for Texas, lasting five innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits with five walks and four strikeouts.

Greg Golson and Ni Ziyang each went two for four for the AirHogs, 24-65.

Wichita is 55-35. The two teams meet again at 7:05 p.m. today.
