Don Schroeder's (R-Hesston) career as a state representative, one that began in 2007, came to an end Aug. 7 in a prrimary loss to Stephen Owens (R-Hesston) for Kansas House District No. 74.

Owens won the district on a 55/45 percent vote — getting 2,037 votes compared to 1,672 for Schroeder, according to the Kansas Secretary of State's office. In Harvey County, Owens collected nearly 54 percent of the vote —  1,107 to 922.

In Harvey County, there are 97 provisional ballots to be canvassed. The election will be canvassed and certified by the Harvey County Commission at 8:15 a.m. Aug. 13.

Owens will be unopposed in the general election in November.

"Over the last few years, I have become increasingly concerned with the lack of leadership in Topeka," Owens told The Kansan last month. "As a Conservative Republican, I believe it is our job to hold the line on tax increases while creating an efficient state government. This simply has not been the case over the last few years and it is time for that to change."

Locally there was one really tight race — the Alta Township Clerk race. Kenneth Stucky nipped Gregg Ratzlaff each 29-27 in the GOP primary.

Voter turnout in Harvey County was 31.86 percent.
