The Newton Rebels won a blowout and lost a close one in weekend play in the Sunflower Collegiate League.
The Rebels knocked off the Salina Shock 10-0 Saturday night and fell to the Hutchinson Monarchs 6-4 Sunday night. Both games were played at Klein-Scott Field.
Saturday’s game was called after seven innings on the 10-run rule. Newton scored in every inning but the fifth and sixth. The Rebels broke the game open with five runs in the third to take an 8-0 lead.
Trey Tucker went five innings for the win, allowing one hit, three walks and seven strikeouts in the 18 batters he faced. Declan Spurlock pitched the sixth inning, striking out one. Jackson Oldham pitched the seventh, allowing a walk with a strikeout.
Dylan Brooks went two for four hitting for the Rebels, driving in four runs. Cale Thompson and Enzo Bonventre each went two for four with two RBIs.
Jeb Sauer had the sole hit for Salina, 1-20.
Hutchinson scored a run each in the second and third innings to take the lead, adding three runs in the fifth and another in the sixth. Newton climbed back into the game with two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh.
Andrew Jindra pitched for the win, allowing four runs on nine hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Newton’s pitching stats were unavailable.
Conor Craig led Hutchinson at the plate, going two for five with two RBIs. Taylor Barber and Jordan Martinez each went two for four with an RBI. Dylan Nedved went two for five with an RBI. Skylar Black hit a solo home run.
Hutchinson improves to 14-7, five games behind SCL leader Cheney. Newton is 6-17 and plays Haven at 7 p.m. today at the Haven baseball field and plays the Wichita Sluggers at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Tabor College field.
