SIOUX CITY, Iowa — In a series that may determine if the Wichita Wingnuts stay in contention for the American Association South Division title, the Wingnuts fell to leaders Sioux City 4-2 Friday night in Sioux City.
The loss was Wichita’s fourth straight against the Explorers. The Wingnuts were swept in a three-game series last week in Wichita.
Sioux City scored in the bottom of the first inning on a Jay Austin sacrifice fly. Dylan Kelly added an RBI single in the second inning while Luis Durango drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Jay Baum drove in a run on a single in the third inning.
Wichita scored a run on an error in both the third and fourth innings.
Wichita starter Travis Banwert (4-2) threw six innings, allowing four runs, six hits, and three walks. Felix Carvallo went finished the game, allowing four hits and five strikeouts.
Sioux City starter James Dykstra went 3 2-3 innings, allowing two unearned runs, three hits, a walk and three strikeouts. Ryan Flores (4-0) went three innings for the win, allowing a hit, a walk and six strikeouts. Patrick Schuster struck out the sole batter he faced in the seventh. Tyler Fallwell pitched the eighth, allowing a walk and three strikeouts. Eric Karch earned the save, allowing two hits and a strikeout in the ninth.
Durango went two for three hitting for the Explorers. Nate Samson and Baum each went two for four. Logan Trowbridge and newcomer Nick Rotola, just signed from Oral Roberts, each went two for four for Wichita.
Sioux City improves to 36-10, winning 10 straight. Wichita falls to 27-18, 8 1/2 games behind the Explorers. The two teams meet again at 7:05 p.m. today.
