The Newton Rebels wasted one of the best pitching performances of the season in a 2-1 loss to the Mulvane Patriots Thursday in Sunflower Collegiate League play at Klein-Scott Field.

Newton pitcher Garrett Redaja took the loss, allowing two runs on six hits with two walks and nine strikeouts.

Mulvane starter Mark Hartley allowed a run and three hits through seven innings, walking two and striking out 10. Drake Harper finished the game for the save, walking one and striking out four.

“A guy goes out there and pitches nine innings with one earned run, you have to win that game,” Newton manager Brent Clark said. “We struck out 14 times. That’s 14 outs we gave away of 27 total. We need to put the ball in play and make the defense make a play. (Redaja) threw 112 pitches in nine innings. That’s outstanding. He’s had three quality starts in a row. That’s three games we should have won. Early on, it was our pitching. Now it’s our hitting. We’ve had our days and we’ve had some off days. If we have an average day at the plate, we probably win this game.”

Mulvane scored in the first inning on an RBI single for Channing Williams. Javis Larson hit an RBI single in the second inning.

Newton scored in the first inning on a Landon Erway single.

Mulvane managed just one base runner from the third through the seventh inning. Newton managed just two base runners from the second through the sixth innings.

Newton put two runners on with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but failed to plate a runner. Newton left two runners on base in the eighth inning.

Newton went down in order in the bottom of the ninth.

Williams and Larson both finished two for four hitting for Mulvane.

Mulvane is 13-4, four games behind Cheney in the SCL. Newton falls to 5-16. Newton hosts Salina at 7 p.m. Saturday at Klein-Scott Field.

“We have Salina on Saturday and Hutch on Sunday,” Clark said. “We will have our work cut out for us. No one wants to lose to us. We have to continue to play our game.”

GAME NOTES — Newton outfielder Jack Leyden is out for the season with a broken arm suffered in Wednesday’s extra-inning win against Hutchinson. Leyden was injured after getting hit by a pitch.
