HAVEN — The Newton Rebels took too long to get the bats going, striking out 11 times in a 6-3 loss to the Haven Warhawks Thursday in Sunflower League play at Haven Field.

“We scored early, and then we put up about six zeros,” Newton manager Brent Clark said. “We punched out 11 times. You can’t expect to win when you strike out 11 times. You need to put the ball in play when you need to put the ball in play.”

Haven struck with four hits in the first inning to score a pair of runs. Ethan Bergkamp hit a two-run double and scored on a Brenden Alsup single.

Newton came back with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning, scoring on an errant pickoff throw and a Wyatt Akins single. Jonathan Herter led off the bottom of the second with a home run over the right field fence.

Haven added two runs in the fifth inning on a Bergkamp single and a Tyler Smith ground out.

With two runners on and two runners out in the top of the ninth, Reese Bayliff hit a pinch hit single to drive in a run for Newton.

Haven’s Jared Scott threw six innings for the win, striking out seven. Jeffrey Hendrixson struck out two in two innings. Carter Fronk struck out two in the ninth.

Sedgwick High grad Trey Tucker took the loss for Newton, striking out three in five innings. Declan Spurlock went two innings, striking out one. Hesston High grad Freddie Loeffler finished the game, striking out one.

“Our bullpen is coming along,” Clark said. “They were throwing strikes. We only walked three tonight. That’s going to be big for us the rest of the year. If we can keep pitching well, our offense will come around.”

Ethan White, Ryan Dearing and Bergkamp each had two hits for Haven. Brody Mariotti and Martin Casillas each went two for four for Newton.

The 0-2 Rebels host the 0-3 Wichita Sluggers at 6 p.m. today.

“They’re all right,” Clark said. “They have some guys. We’re pitching a lot better. If our pitchers can keep us in the game, then our offense can get going.”
