VALLEY CENTER — The Newton High School girls’ soccer team had top-seeded Valley Center’s attack stymied for most of the game, but the Hornets found the back of the net twice late in the game for a 2-0 win Thursday in the finals of the Class 5A South-Central Regional I in Valley Center.

The 15-1-1 Hornets advance to the state quarterfinals Tuesday in Valley Center.

Valley Center scored both goals on Lexi Eddy back passes. Vanessa Aguilar scored the first goal on a 35-yard floater in the 56th minute. Emma Girtz scored the second goal in the 63rd minute on a 25-yard floater.

“The first half, we did a really good job of keeping them from taking shots inside the box,” Newton coach Scott Jantzi said. “We didn’t allow them to penetrate. In the second half, they were able to get two over (Newton keeper Megan Million’s) head. They weren’t quality shots, but they did their job. We tried to get people forward in the second half, unfortunately, our backs got tired and we had to sub to keep it solid. I’m very proud of the ladies. We faced the number one team over there. We did well. We played to our potential. It’s a good squad we faced. They passed the ball well. They moved forward well.”

Newton was outshot 6-2. Kyrah Klumpp had two saves for Valley Center. Million had four saves for Newton.

Valley controlled possession from the start, but also played very conservative, keeping it in its own defensive end for about the first 10 minutes of play.

The Railers actually got the first shot off midway in the first half on a long floater picked up by the Hornet keeper. Newton also had a breakaway chance by Abbi Jackson that was stopped by Klumpp before Newton could get the shot off.

Between the 32nd and 33rd minutes, Valley Center was able to get three shots off that Million was able to snag.

The Hornets were able to win five corner kicks in the half.

Newton generated a couple of chances early in the second half, including winning a corner kick, but couldn’t get a shot.

After the Hornet’s go-ahead score, Newton got a long shot off that was stopped. Valley was able to control the ball after its second goal.

Newton ends the season 9-9 and loses four seniors — Million, Abby Edson, Izzy Saenz and Makenzie Parsons.

“Our ladies learned a lot this year,” Jantzi said. “We finished .500 this year. We have a lot of returners coming back. We’ll be right back here. Our seniors were all starters that will have to be replaced. We will encourage them to play as much as we can. We only get them for three months. For the other nine months, it’s up to them. We’ll be able to defend next year. We need to get some kids who can go forward.”
