The Bethel College softball team gained a split and another team record during play Thursday against Kansas Wesleyan at Allen Wedel Field.
Bethel lost the first game 8-5 in eight innings but rallied to win the second game 7-5.
Bethel junior Madison McDowell had 10 strikeouts in the first game to set a new school record for strikeouts in a game. She breaks the record set by Chelsea Grandstaff of nine in 2013.
McDowell (4-2) took the loss, going seven innings and allowing four earned runs, eight hits and a walk. Rylie Scudder pitched the seventh inning, allowing two hits, a run, a walk and a strikeout.
Megan Krause went the distance for Kansas Wesleyan, allowing three earned runs on nine hits with two walks and 14 strikeouts.
Kansas Wesleyan scored two runs in the top of the first on a Bethel error.
Bethel came back with an error and a Leisle Hoffman single to score a run in the third inning. Jeni Reichenberger hit an RBI single in the fourth inning. Hoffman hit an RBI single in the fifth.
Lauren Blue and Tara Stubits each had RBI hits for Kansas Wesleyan in the top of the sixth.
In the bottom of the seventh, Bethel put runners at first and third with one out. With two outs, Kerrigan Simons stole home to tie the game. Bethel got a runner on third, but a strikeout ended the rally.
In the top of the eighth, a passed ball put the tie-break runner on third with no outs. Lindsay Maryon singled to score the tie-breaker. After another single put runners at the corner, Jasmine Carlos hit a bunt single to score a run. Emily Ginestra doubled to score two runs.
Bethel opened the bottom of the eighth with two strikeouts. Alix Gallop drew a walk and Reichenberger then singled to score the tie-breaker runner. An error loaded the bases, but a strikeout ended the game.
Ginestra finished three for four for KWU. Maryon went two for three. Blue went two for four.
For Bethel, Jordan Hill, Hoffman and Reichenberger each went two for four.
In the second game, Kansas Wesleyan scored on a Blue RBI single in the first and an Alley Stockton home run in the second inning.
With two outs in the bottom of the second, McDowell hit a two-run triple and scored on Hill single. Hill scored on a Hoffman triple.
With two outs in the top of the fourth, Matheney hit an RBI triple and came home on a Maryon double to tie the game.
With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Alexis Wilson singled, stole second and scored on an error. Emalee Overbay and Reichenberger each singled. McDowell followed with an RBI single. Hill added an RBI single.
With two outs in the top of the seventh, Ginestra hit a solo home run. A ground out ended the game.
Matheney went four for four hitting for KWU. Emily Sparks went three for four. Ginestra went two for four.
Overbay went two for two hitting for Bethel. McDowell and Hoffman each went three for four. Hill went two for four.
Bethel starter Baileigh went 3.2 innings, allowing four runs on 10 hits with a walk and a strikeout. Raegan Beckley finished the game for the win, allowing three hits, a run, a walk and two strikeouts.
Stubits took the loss for KWU, allowing two earned runs, 13 hits and two strikeouts. Krause pitched an inning, striking out one.
Kansas Wesleyan is 16-20, 6-8 in KCAC play. Bethel is 16-17, 7-7 in KCAC play. With eight games remaining in conference play, Bethel is tied for sixth place, while Kansas Wesleyan is in eighth place.
Bethel is scheduled to play Saturday at 24th-ranked (NAIA) Ottawa, but those games have been postponed because of impending bad weather. A make-up date has not been set. Bethel plays at 2 p.m. Wednesday at McPherson, which is in fifth place in the conference.
The top eight teams advance to the KCAC post-season tournament.
