Southwestern

WINFIELD — For just the fifth time in school history, the Bethel College softball team claimed a sweep a KCAC doubleheader, claiming a pair of wins over Southwestern Tuesday in Winfield.

Bethel won the first game 9-5 and the second game 8-3.

Bethel took a 5-2 lead after three innings in the first game adding four more runs before the Moundbuilders tried to mount a seventh-inning comeback, scoring three runs.

Madison McDowell threw six innings for the win, allowing two runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Rylie Scudder finished the game, striking out one.

Lizzy Mills went three for four hitting for Bethel with two RBIs. Leisle Hoffman went two for five with two RBIs. Michelle Schrag also drove in two runs.

Hannah Foltz took the loss for Southwestern. MacKenzie Lyons drove in two runs. Paige Hall went three for four hitting with an RBI.

Bethel led 5-1 after three innings in the second game. Each team scored a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Bethel added a run in the seventh.

Baileigh Rager and Michelle Schrag each went three for four hitting with three RBIs. Rager hit a home run.

Rager pitched 6.2 innings for the win, striking out three and walking fives. Raegan Beckley pitched the final out. Lyons took the loss for Southwestern. Cady Norton went three for four with an RBI.

Southwestern falls to 18-15, 6-6 in KCAC play. Bethel improves to 15-16, 6-6 in KCAC play. Bethel plays at 2 p.m. Thursday at home against Kansas Wesleyan.

HUTCHINSON — The Bethel College men’s golf team moved up a spot in the standings on the final day of the Sterling Invitational Tuesday at Carey Park in Hutchinson.

Bethel improved its second-day team score by 16 strokes, setting a school record of 291 for lowest 18-hole team round.

Sterling won the tournament at 570, followed by Kansas Wesleyan at 587, Bethel at 598, Kansas Wesleyan B at 606 and Central Christian at 609.

Jin Ho (Peter) Choi of Sterling was top medalist with a one-over 141.

Ben Hadden of Kansas Wesleyan, Parker Austin of Bethel and Marshall Martin of Sterling all tied for second three strokes back.

Connor Mickens and Sam Bertholf of Bethel tied for 12th at 150. Chase Anderson finished 19th at 154. Chase Sparks tied for 29th at 168.

Bethel ends the regular season April 23 and 24 at the KCAC Championships at Buffalo Dunes in Garden City.

Newton soccer

team falls

MAIZE — The Newton High School girls’ soccer team fell to Maize South 10-0 Tuesday at Maize.

The game was called in the second half on the 10-goal rule.

Maize South led 8-0.

The loss was Newton’s third straight.

Newton is 3-4 and hosts Buhler at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Newton junior varsity also lost to Maize South 10-0.

compete at Central

SALINA — The Hesston High School boys’ tennis team took third, while Newton High School took sixth out of eight teams Tuesday at the Salina Central Classic.

Host Central won at 60 points, followed by Andover at 42, Hesston at 39, Smoky Valley at 37, Garden City at 31, Newton at 26, Salina South at 23 and Emporia at 22.

For Hesston, Logan Gamble placed second in singles, losing in the finals to Jaydn Richardson of Andover 8-2. Rhain Isaac finished eighth at 1-3.

In doubles play, Jorge Morales and Jeb Carlson finished sixth at 2-2. Daniel Casimir and Isaac Decker finished 15th at 1-3.

For Newton, Jason Wong finished fourth in singles at 2-2. Jonah Schloneger finished ninth at 3-1.

In doubles, Seth Bontrager and Zeke Thompson finished 12th at 1-3. Daniel Buller and Joel Golubski finished 16th at 0-4.

Newton competes at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Hutchinson Invitational at the State Fairgrounds Tennis Center.

Hesston competes at 3 p.m. Friday at Conway Springs in college-style dual meets with Conway Springs and Central Plains.
