Given that a number of individuals from Newton were regularly (at least once a week) coming to his store in Wichita, Chris Martin saw an opportunity to expand his business into Harvey County. Ultimately, it was an opportunity fully realized about a month ago, with the opening of BoxDrop Mattress and Furniture Direct at 204 W. Fifth Street in Newton.

"Wichita has done very well for us, and I was really surprised at how many people in the Newton area were actually driving down to Wichita to go buy a mattress from us, so we decided, well, we need to find a place up here," Martin said. "We had been looking for a second location for a little while."

Martin and his family have run their business in Wichita (Wichita Mattress Direct) for going on two years, and he said he is still shocked how far people will come from to shop at his store, but the frequency of visits from Newton clientele made the decision on where to open a second location an easy one — with the first month of business in Newton already exceeding this expectations.

Partnering with the BoxDrop brand allows Martin to sell mattresses at a "considerable savings," noting he will often tell customers to expect a 50 to 75 percent discount as compared to retail prices, which he hopes will only help to build the customer base in Newton.

"We want to get our name out there and just show folks that you don't have to pay retail. You can buy a good quality mattress, brand new, never used or refurbished, direct from the manufacturer and you'll save a ton of money," Martin said. "We want to say that we have a mattress for every budget. It doesn't have to be on the low end; we have higher end models as well, but there's a mattress for everybody. We'll try and find your budget to work with and we always try to gave the best deals out there that we can."

On top of the mattresses, the Newton location also sells furniture (i.e. end tables, dressers, etc.), which is new avenue for the business, but one Martin said is a natural fit.

"It goes well together. A lot of times, if folks are looking for bedroom furniture they need a mattress to go with it. They want to get something new for everything," Martin said.

The focus is currently on selling bedroom sets, but if the furniture side of the business is popular enough Martin said he might consider expanding sales to include couches, living room furniture and more.

Excited to be in business in Newton, Martin is set on continuing to get people into the store, because he is confident they'll like what they see.

"I think we'll open up some eyes for them," Martin said. "We'll show them, yeah, we can offer a good quality product with warranties at a really affordable price."
