6th at McPherson

McPHERSON — The Newton High School boys’ golf team finished sixth out of 15 teams Thursday at the McPherson Invitational at the Turkey Creek Golf Course.

Salina Sacred Heart won the meet at 300, followed by Hays at 312, Salina South at 335, Sterling at 344 and Arkansas City at 353. Newton had a team score of 356.

We left a lot of strokes on the course though. All our players suffered at least one bad hole (quadruple bogey) and we struggled with the speed of the greens. Working on our consistency and course management will be a focus as we prepare for our home meet on Tuesday at Sand Creek.”

Tragdon McCrae of Hays was top medalist at 72.

Newton was led by Zach Engelken at at 87, followed by Tanner DeGrado at 88, Erick Hernandez at 90, Hunter Lujano at 91, Max Willingham at 113 and Cooper Burns at 123.
