WICHITA — High winds and cold temperatures turned the West Urban Baseball Complex into a hitter’s paradise and a pitcher’s nightmare Tuesday in a triangular between the Newton Railers, Wichita Southeast Buffaloes and Wichita Trinity Academy Knights.
Newton downed Southeast 22-2 and fell to Trinity Academy 26-20.
The game against Southeast was called after three innings on the 15-run rule. Newton led 12-2 after two innings and scored 10 runs in the third inning.
Matt Seirer went two for two hitting for the Railers, both home runs, driving in six runs. Alex Kern went three for three with a home run and three RBIs. Bryan Cusick went two for three with three RBIs. Warren Dietz drove in two runs. Colton Davis went two for three hitting.
Josh Hansen and Zach Kennell combined to hold Southeast to one hit. Hansen allowed two runs with a hit, five walks and a strikeout. Kennell picked up the win, walking one and striking out four.
Against Trinity Academy, the Knights scored in every inning but the fourth, jumping out to a 9-0 lead in the first inning and scoring eight runs in the fifth. Newton scored eight runs in the second inning, eight runs in the fifth inning and two runs each in the final two innings.
Bryan Cusick went two for five hitting with four RBIs. Seirer went two for three with four RBIs. Kern went four for five with three RBIs. Colton Davis went two for four with a home run and three RBIs. Dietz went three for five with two RBIs.
Newton used six pitchers in the game. Kern took the loss.
Newton is 4-4 and plays at 4 p.m. Friday at Andover Central.
