The Newton High School girls’ soccer team was locked into a defensive battle with Andover Tuesday in non-league play at Fischer Field.

Braelyn McSparen was able to put in a rebounded shot in the 58th minute to hand the visiting Trojans a 1-0 win in a game that featured cold temperatures and heavy winds.

“Both teams fought well,” Newton coach Scott Jantzi said. “They were able to get one back behind our defense. Meg (Million) made the initial save. We just didn’t have the defense to recover on the rebounds. We created opportunities to tie it up or take the lead. (Andover coach) Chris (Lemons) always has well-organized teams. They did a good job of making passes. We created some opportunities ourselves. Defensive-wise, other than that goal, we did a good job of defending. They didn’t have many opportunities. It was a pretty even match.”

Newton was outshot 7-3. All of Andover’s shots came in the second half. Shannon Young had three saves in goal for the Trojans. Megan Million has six saves for the Railers.

Possession in the first half favored Andover about 55 percent to 45 percent. Newton had the sole shot of the half on a slow roller that was easily stopped. Andover got a corner kick.

Possession was closer to 50-50 in the second half. The Railers failed to finish on several opportunities early in the period. Andover missed on several shots late in the game.

Andover improves to 4-1. Newton is 3-2 and hosts Valley Center at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in a game originally scheduled to be played in Valley Center, but moved to Newton when Valley Center’s track invitational was rescheduled for Thursday to avoid bad weather Friday.

“It will be another well-organized team,” Jantzi said. “We’ll have to come back and make our adjustments.”

JUNIOR VARSITY — The Newton junior varsity fell to Andover 5-0. Newton is 1-1 and plays Thursday at home against Valley Center.
