There is a new festival coming to Newton, one to celebrate Sand Creek. The Sand Creek Summer Daze Festival will be from August 17 through 19 with events in Athletic Park and on Sand Creek.
“The Sand Creek Summer Daze Festival is your not-so-average three-day festival,” said Greg Hanson, chair of the festival committee. ”It is encouraging the Newton community to celebrate and discover the numerous fun and enjoyable opportunities that exist on and around Sand Creek.”
The festival will feature three days of events in Athletic Park and on Sand Creek. There are currently 19 events scheduled for the three days. Events on the creek will include a cardboard regatta and a “Floating Flotilla Parade.”
“We want as much stuff as we can on the creek as we can do to show the beauty of it and how it can help the Newton community in the future,” Hanson said.
Events within the park will include a concert, a human foosball tournament, a kite expo, a kids entertainment area, a food truck rally, barbecue cook-off and a home brewing contest. There will be a 5K run through Athletic Park and along Sand Creek as part of the festival.
Some events will be free, others will require a $5 button.
The city commission approved waiving all special events fees for the festival at its meeting this week. Other support for the festival has come in the form of technical support from RiverFest in Wichita and equipment loaned by the board of the Chisholm Trail Festival which has not operated a Newton festival for several years.
"They are behind us as well and have backed us," Hanson said."I want to thank the people who had put on the Chisholm Trail Fest."
