ABILENE – The Newton High School softball team opened the season with a pair of losses to Abilene Tuesday in Abilene,
Newton lost the first game 8-3 and the second game 17-7. The second game was called after five innings on the 10-run rule.
In the first game, Newton led 2-1, but gave up four runs in the bottom of the second.
Emily Burt went the distance for Abilene, allowing one earned run on seven hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Zoe Stonehouse took the loss for Newton, allowing five earned runs on 11 hits with five walks and three strikeouts. Blazee Stahl pitched the final two outs.
Rylie Volkman led Abilene at the plate, going three for four with two RBIs. Burt went two for four with two RBIs. Maci Debenham went three for four with an RBI. Brett Short went two for three with three runs scored.
Toria Thaw led Newton with two hits in four at bats, driving in two runs. Reagan Treffer added an RBI.
Newton led the second game 7-5, but gave up nine runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth.
Burt went two for five hitting in the second game, driving in three runs. Jade Vopat went three for three with two RBIs. Rylie Volkman, Hannah Wiley and Mika Gose each drove in two runs. Jensen Roth went three for three hitting.
Newton was led by Jayden Walton, who went two for three with two RBIs. Mallory Seirer, Thaw, Stahl and Jentry Griswold each added an RBI.
Vopat went four innings for the win, allowing four earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Ashton Roth pitched the fifth inning, striking out one.
Stahl took the loss for Newton, allowing seven earned runs on eight hits with five walks and a strikeout. Stonehouse finished the game, allowing four earned runs on four hits with a walk.
Newton hosts Valley Center at 4 p.m. today.
