RAPID CITY, N.D. — Mark MacMillan scored 6:20 into the third period to give the Wichita Thunder a 3-2 win over the Rapid City Rush Friday night in a key ECHL win for the Thunder at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.
Wichita improves to 33-24-4-2, tying with Cincinnati for fifth place in the ECHL Western Conference. The top eight teams in each conference advance to the playoffs with the top four teams hosting in the first round. Wichita is nine points (4 1/2 games) behind Idaho for fourth place. Wichita has nine games remaining, while Idaho has eight.
After a scoreless first period, Wichita scored twice in the second period on goals by Ralph Cuddemi from Jeremy Beaudry and MacMillian and an unassisted goal from Ryan Van Stralen.
The Rush came back with a pair of goals late in the second period. Peter Sivak scored from Andrew Radjenovic and Jack Walker. Radjenovic then scored from Walker.
Cuddemi assisted on MacMillan’s game winner.
Wichita was outshot 35-31. Nick Riopel had 33 saves in goal for Wichita. Adam Vay had 28 saves for Rapid City.
The Rush drop to 20-38-3-2. Wichita and Rapid City meet again at 8:05 p.m. today in Rapid City.
