OVERLAND PARK — Blake Shannon and Connor Schumacher each drove in a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead Johnson County Community College to a 7-5 win over Hesston College Tuesday in Overland Park.
Malik Williams opened the scoring for the Cavaliers with an RBI triple in the bottom of the first inning. Kyler Rinehart hit an RBI single for Hesston in the top of the second.
Ty Herrenbruck hit an RBI single for Johnson County in the bottom of the third inning.
In the top of the fourth inning, Hesston scored on a wild pitch. Another run scored on an error. Jeremy Deckinger added a sacrifice fly for a run.
Johnson County answered in the bottom of the fifth when Williams hit an RBI double and scored on a ground out.
An error in the top of the sixth inning tied the game.
Dylan Bierman threw three innings of relief for the win, allowing two hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Starter Chase Hampton went 3.1 innings, allowing three runs on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Bailey Jelinek went 2.2 innings, allowing two runs on two hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Hesston starter Jonathan Law went 4.2 innings, allowing five runs on five hits with six walks and five strikeouts. Kantaro Sekiya went 1.2 innings and took the loss, allowing two runs on a hit with a walk and three strikeouts. Dylan Schoknect finished the game, allowing one hit.
Herrenbruck went two for four hitting for Johnson County, 12-9. Williams went two for five. Blake Shannon drove in two runs.
Logan Dryden went two for four hitting for Hesston.
Hesston is 11-12 and hosts Southwestern (Iowa) Community College March 23, 24 and 25 for a four-game series.
