Fire departments from several Harvey County cities responded to a a pair of grass fires March 2.

The largest grass fire is located at 7800 SE 36th, near McClains. Crews continue to fight the fire in winds of more than 25 miles per hour.  Included in the fire is a large pile of telelphone poles. Crews have been working to save buildings in the area.

Halstead, Walton, Peabody, Whitewater and Newton have all responded to the fire.

Crews also fought a fire at 9000 S. Ridge Road, just north of the town of Sedgwick. That fire was borught under control during the afternoon of March 2. 

Harvey County was listed as a severe drought area on the most recent drought monitor, released March 1.
