ELBING — It takes a combination of continued success and longevity to reach 600 wins in high school basketball.

Berean Academy boys’ basketball coach Lewis Wiebe reached that landmark Tuesday in a 56-23 Class 2A sub-state win over Canton-Galva in Elbing.

Wiebe has coached for 33 years — one at Hutchinson Central Christian, eight at Oklahoma Bible Academy and 24 at Berean Academy.

He has led the Warriors to 10 trips to state, winning state titles in 2010 and 2011. His teams finished second in 1995 and 1999.

Win 600 was secured early as the Warriors led 17-5 after the first quarter and 36-12 at the half. Berean held the Eagles to four points in the third quarter.

Devin Rust scored 16 points for Berean. Nine other Warriors scored in the game.

Nick Pearson scored 13 points for Canton-Galva, 3-17.

Berean is 18-3 and faces Inman at 6 p.m. Friday.
