HAYS — The Remington Broncos have three of four wrestlers still in contention after the first day of competition at the Class 3-2-1A state championships in Hays.

Both Hesston entries were eliminated after the first day.

Scott Community leads the field with 80.5 points, followed by Hoxie with 62, Hoisington with 57.5, Smith Center with 53.5 and Silver Lake with 50. Remington is tied for 46th with five points. Hesston will finish scoreless.

At 113 pounds, Jacob Holle was pinned in the first period by Zack Sherman of Hoxie. Holle stayed alive with a 12-7 decision over Jonathon Sayles of Salina St. John’s Military. Holle enters today’s second consolation round 15-14.

At 120 pounds, Caleb Farmer was pinned in the second period by Alex Archer of Rossville. Farmer came back with a 10-5 decision over Jake Reed of Colby.

Farmer advances to the second consolation round 13-6.

At 145 pounds, Javier Martinez lost in the first round by fall to Triston Hopkins of Oskaloosa in the third period. In the first consolation round, Martinez pinned Tranden Daerr of Garden Plain in the first period.

Martinez advances to the second consolation round 33-9.

At 152 pounds, Jeyton Saunders dropped a 12-0 major decision to Holden Hurla of Rossville. In the first consolation round, Saunders lost to Jalen Kruep of Rawlins County in 1:58, ending the season 29-15.

Hesston’s Jason Hecht lost in the first round to Justus McDaniel by fall in the first period at 126 pounds. Hecht fell in the first consolation round to Thad Metcalfe of Perry-Lecompton 7-2 and ends the season 27-15.

At 160 pounds, Matt Whitsitt lost in the first round to Dylan Stewart of Sterling 7-1. In the first consolation round, Whitsitt lost to Brayden Seimears of Riverside 13-7 to end the season 31-10.

Wrestling resumes at 9 a.m. today.
