For the second straight night, the Newton High School boys’ basketball team dug a hole early that was too deep to dig out of in a 63-42 loss to Salina Central Friday night in AV-CTL I play at Ravenscroft Gym.

Newton falls to 9-11 to end the regular season, 7-5 in league play to tie for third. Newton and Central split the season series.

“In the first half, they made us play defense a little longer than we wanted to,” Newton assistant coach Kylan Hawkins said. “We got a little stagnant on defense. We came down on the offensive end and rushed a lot of shots. We took a lot of shots with one pass. They were quick shots that were probably shots we shouldn’t have taken. I like the way we tried to battle back in the second half. We got some quick buckets. We got some quick stops. It’s hard to come back from 23 down. We came back in the second half and fought. Central is a pretty good team. They are pretty good with that three ball. We tried to contest it, but they were dropping for them.”

Hawkinson took over the team as head coach Andy Hill’s wife is expecting a baby.

Newton trailed 13-3 early and 20-5 at the end of the quarter. Newton trailed 33-10 at the half. Newton made a run to start the third quarter, but Central matched it late to lead 48-25. Newton won the fourth quarter by two. Both teams dumped the bench late.

Mark Grammer led Central with 15 points. Harper Williams added 11.

For Newton, Alex Krogmeier and Ty Berry each scored 15. The two combined for eight 3-pointers. Central hit nine from 3-point range.

Isaiah Presley returned to the lineup after missing several games with an injury.

Newton will open sub-state play Tuesday with the pairings set this morning. The finals are Friday.

“What ever team it is, we just have to be ready for them,” Hawkins said. “We have to get out after them. It’s 0-0 now. Unless you want to go home, you have to work.”
