VALLEY CENTER — The Newton High School wrestling team took 13 wrestlers to the Class 5A regionals Friday and Saturday at Valley Center High School, claiming seven state qualifiers.

The Railers finished fifth out of 13 teams in competition.

Goddard won the meet at 255.5, followed by Valley Center at 195.5, Maize at 183, Emporia at 132 and Newton at 126.

Winning titles were Grant Treaster at 113 pounds and Wyatt Hendrickson at 195 pounds.

Cyle Gautschi finished third at 220 pounds. Dante Harper finished fourth at 160 pounds.

Fifth-place finishes went to Sawyer Mock at 120 pounds, Boone Roberson at 132 pounds and Josh Edson at 138 pounds.

“We placed seven,” Newton coach Tommy Edgmon said. “We came in with 13. Unfortunately, our 106 (Zach Engelken), broke his hand and was unable to come. If he were here, I think he would have had a good chance to qualify.”

At 113 pounds, Treaster opened action with a 26-second pin and two major decisions to reach the finals. Against Lucas Glover of Goddard, Treaster scored a takedown in the first period, an escape and a takedown in the second and another takedown in the third for a 7-2 decision. Treaster did suffer a cut on the top of his head late in the match.

“I wrestled him at Derby,” Treaster said. “I pinned him the first period using my cradle. He figured out my cradle this time, so I had to work on wrestling on my feet and getting more takedowns. I was able to control the matches and win.”

Treaster enters state 32-2.

“I’m feeling good,” Treaster said. “My weight’s under control. I have to keep that mentality. I have to stay healthy. The conditioning is there. I need to keep on pushing for one more week.”

At 195 pounds, Hendrickson received a first-round bye and won a pair of pins to reach the finals. Against Brady Bockover of Bishop Carroll, Hendrickson took a 6-1 lead after the first period and scored the pin early in the second.

“I wanted to make sure I got the lead early,” Hendrickson said. “I was just hoping to take control.”

Hendrickson, the defending state runner-up, advances to state at 30-1, avenging his only loss this season to the top-ranked Class 4A wrestler, Bradon Morgan of El Dorado.

“I haven’t faced the no. 2 guy this year (Anthony Ganoa of St. Thomas Aquinas), but I’ve faced some of the guys he’s faced,” Hendrickson said. “I just have to keep working on my technique and my moves. Your conditioning is not going to get better with a week left. If it isn’t good by now, it’s not going to get better. I just have to have a game plan.”

Gautschi finished 4-1 at 220 pounds. Gautschi lost his first match to Jose Ulteres of Emporia by fall in the second period. Gautschi came back to win his next four matches. Tied 1-1 in the consolation finals against L.J. Flax of Goddard Eisenhower, Gautschi scored a takedown 30 seconds into overtime for a 3-1 decision.

At 160 pounds, Harper finished 3-2. After a loss by technical fall in the semifinals, Harper won his consolation semifinal match. In the consolation finals against Anthony Delgado of Emporia, Harper twice had shots countered to give up takedowns, falling 5-1. Harper enters state 32-9.

Mock finished 4-2 at 120 pounds. In the fifth-place match against Justin Watkins of Maize, Mock gave up a reversal midway in the second period, but scored one in the third to force overtime. Mock posted the takedown midway in overtime for the 4-2 decision. Mock will enter state 15-20.

Roberson finished 4-2 at 132 pounds. Roberson won his fifth-place match by injury forfeit. Roberson will enter state 22-13.

Edson finished 4-2 at 138 pounds. In the fifth-place match, Edson scored a second-period reversal and three back points against Matthew Morrell of Bishop Carroll. Edson gave up a pair of penalty points for stalling in the third period, but held on for a 5-2 decision. Edson enters state 21-14.

Nick Antonowich finished 1-2 at 152, ending the season 1-9. Bryan Cusick finished 1-2 at 170 pounds, ending the season 12-14. Brayden Miller finished 1-2 at 182 pounds, finishing the season 5-21.

Gaige Llamas finished 0-2 at 126 pounds, ending the season 2-6. Trevor Waldrop finished 0-2 at 145 pounds, ending the season 3-6. Brecken Wedel finished 0-2 at heavyweight, ending the season 10-16.

The state meet is Friday and Saturday at Hartman Arena in Park City.

“Hopefully, we can bring some hardware home at the end of the season,” Edgmon said. “… Our conditioning is good. Where we land on the bracket is going to help. We have to work on some individual stuff. All the hard work during the season has paid off. … We’ll have some good first-round matches. We should have some winable matches.”
