With three matches to go, the Newton High School wrestling team trailed Campus 30-18.
Heading into the heavyweight match between Newton’s Brecken Wedel and Jaocb Bechler, the Railers were down 30-27.
Wedel claimed a 1-0 decision to tie the match. The first three dual-meet tie-breaking criteria (least team penalty points, none; least individual penalty points, none; most individual match wins, Newton 7, Campus 7) failed to determine the winner.
It came down to the fourth tie-breaker — most pins, defaults, forfeits and disqualifications (Newton 3, Campus 2, all pins) to determine the winner and hand Newton a 31-30 win.
“It came down to the tie-breaker,” Newton coach Tommy Edgmon said. “It came down to who had the most wins, and we were tied at seven. Then it was most pins, and we won that 3-2.”
After a scoreless first period, Wedel scored an early escape in the second to take the lead, avoiding serious trouble the rest of the period.
Wedel rode Bechler out in the third period, breaking Bechler down every time the Campus wrestler tried to get to his feet.
“It was pretty simple,” Wedel said. “If I win, we win. If he wins, we lose. I was just waiting for him to come up so I could wrap around his body, then take him down to the mat. It takes a lot. There’s a lot of pressure. If I don’t win, then your team will be upset with you.”
Newton improves to 5-5 in dual meets, 3-2 in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I duals. Newton is coming off a sixth-place finish at the 30-plus team Rocky Welton Invitational last weekend and has one dual remaining before regionals.
“We’re looking at a top 10 finish at state,” Wedel said. “We’re doing pretty good right now.”
Wyatt Hendrickson started the comeback at 195 pounds with a first-period pin over Gabe Snow.
At 220 pounds, Cyle Gautschi took a 4-3 lead over Ian Kampe of Campus, adding an escape in third period for a 5-3 decision.
Newton’s first win came at 126 pounds, where Gaige Llamas pinned Korbin Williams in the first period.
Boone Roberson followed with a 4-2 decision over Nathan Bowen of Campus at 132 pounds. All of Roberson’s scoring came in the first period.
At 145 pounds, Newton’s Trevor Waldrop took a 7-1 lead against Cade Ray and went on to an 11-4 decision.
At 160 pounds, Dante Harper pinned Campus’ Dakota Mitchell in the second period.
At 106 pounds, Newton’s Zach Engelken was pinned in the second period by Kale McCracken.
At 113 pounds, Tjaden Simmons dropped a 7-3 decision to Campus’ Jacob Rymer.
At 120 pounds, Newton’s Sawyer Mock was taken down eight times in a 16-6 major decision loss to Kai Reha.
At 138 pounds, Josh Edson was tied 1-1 in the third period against Campus’ Alex McCuan, but gave up a takedown with 13 seconds remaining for a 3-1 loss.
At 152 pounds, Newton’s Nick Antonowich was pinned in the first period by Zach Dorton.
At 170 pounds, Newton’s Bryan Cusick gave up a 17-2 technical fall to Brycen Schroeder.
At 182 pounds, Brayden Miller of Newton gave up a takedown with 10 seconds left in the match to drop a 5-3 decision to Garin Williams.
Newton ends the regular season Thursday at Maize, a team that beat Newton 48-28 at the Wayne Jackson Dual Tournament at the beginning of the season in Arkansas City.
“We need to work on our conditioning,” Edgmon said. “When it comes down to the third period, our technique and strength are there. With good conditioning and better shape, you can find a way to win.”
