Friday’s games

Kapaun-MC 52, Dodge City 45

Twenty five turnovers proved to be too much for the Dodge City Red Demons to overcome in a 52-45 loss to Kapaun-Mt. Carmel in the consolation semifinals of the Newton Invitational girls’ basketball tournament at Ravenscroft Gym.

Kapaun, 4-9, plays at 3:30 p.m. today for fifth place. Dodge City, 6-5, plays at 1 p.m. for seventh place.

“We did not handle their pressure very well and made too many errors,” Dodge City coach Kelley Snodgrass said. “The turnovers that they forced didn’t bother me tonight. It was the unforced errors that hurt us.”

Anna Roulston led Kapaun with 17 points, blocking five shots.

Chidera Okoro led Dodge City with 11 points, followed by Madison Armstrong with 10.

Dodge City used four Kapaun turnovers and four of six free throw shooting to take a 6-0 lead. Kapaun started creating turnovers of its own for a 9-2 run. Dodge City led 10-9 at the end of the period.

Kapaun opened the second quarter with an 11-4 run. Dodge City got back within one. Kapaun led 23-20 at the half.

Kapaun used six turnovers in the third quarter to extend its lead to eight. The Red Demons took a time out, but continued to commit turnovers. A Hayden Sanchez three-point play with 6.7 seconds left in the period got Dodge City back within 10, 42-32, at the end of the period.

Dodge City got back within six in the fourth quarter, but Anna Roulston hit back-to-back layups, including one on a steal, to put the Crusaders back up by 10. The Red Demons made one more run late to get within six, but missed chances to get closer.

“We’re playing a lot of girls a lot of minutes,” Snodgrass said. “We miss (Ezinne Okoro). She brings a lot of leadership to the floor.”
