The Olathe Northwest Ravens used big runs at the start of the first and third quarters to get by Kapaun-Mt. Carmel Crusaders 59-44 Thursday in the opening game of the 42nd Newton Invitational girls’ basketball tournament.

Northwest, 9-1, advances to the semifinals at 6:30 p.m. Friday. Kapaun, 3-9, plays at 3 p.m. today in the consolation semifinals.

Olathe Northwest, 9-1, was led by Sarah Beth Gueldner with 30 points, hitting four 3-pointers and eight of eight from the free throw line. Kaylie Kappelman added 11 points.

Anna Roulston led 3-9 Kapaun with 18 points.

Tied 4-4, Northwest started hitting from outside, ending the quarter on an 18-2 run. The Ravens were nine of 12 shooting in the period.

Caija Allen went on a 6-0 run for Kapaun to start the second quarter. Kapaun got within eight, but the Ravens were able to pull out by 14. A Gueldner shot with two seconds left in the half put Northwest up 36-23.

Northwest put things away with a 14-5 run to start the third quarter. Kapaun replied with a 10-0 run of its own to cut the deficit to 12 at the end of the period, 50-38.

Kapaun got within 10 in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t draw any close. A Gueldner trey put the Ravens up by 17 with 1:16 to play.
