Newton Baseball

Club to meet

The Newton Babe Ruth Baseball Organization and Newton Baseball Club have merged into one organization called the Newton Baseball Club.

The club will be holding a meeting for players and parents at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Cooper Early Education Center, 816 Oak.

There will be teams at the 10U, 12U, 13U and 14U levels. Depending on the interest at each age group, there will be league and travel teams.

Martinez takes

weekly honors

WICHITA — Bethel College senior Julio Martinez was named the KCAC men’s track athlete of the week for the second straight week.

At the Cavalier Night Relays, Martinez won the 1,000-meter run in 2:34.45, topping a field of 20 athletes.

It was the second school record set by Martinez in the indoor season.

Cherry receives

national award

TOPEKA — Kansas State High School Activities Association Assistant Executive Director David Cherry is one of 12 recipients of a National Federation of State High School Association Citations.

Cherry has severed with the KSHSAA the past 22 years, administering the state swimming and diving championship and soccer championships. He also led the Student Council Leadership Workshops and the KSHSAA Coaching School.

Cherry is a former coach and teacher at Remington High School, as well as at Emporia and Ellis.
