HILLSBORO — After a first-quarter track meet, the Hesston Swathers settled down and buried Sunrise Christian Academy 79-46 Saturday in the third-place game of the Hillsboro Trojan Classic.

“We haven’t been playing well defensively,” Hesston coach Greg Raleigh said. “We made some adjustments at halftime. We went to our trap and our half-court. I was happy with our defense in the second half. We held them to (14) points.”

Hesston rebounded after a 71-41 loss to second-ranked (KBCA, Class 4A, Division II) Holcomb Friday night.

“We have played a really tough schedule of late,” Raleigh said. “We have to work on some things — moving the ball and sharing the ball. We want to do the right thing right now. We don’t want to force a lot of things. Our four post players probably played their best game of the year.”

Hesston, 10-3, was led by Reese Nebel with 22 points, Ben Bollinger with 13 points and Cameron Cox with 12.

John Dunn led 8-6 SCA with 25 points.

In a back-and-forth first quarter with neither team lead, Hesston led 22-20 at the end of the period.

Taking advantage of SCA turnovers, Hesston made an 11-2 run to open the second quarter. The Buffaloes got back within eight late in the half. Nebel hit one of two free throws with 4.0 seconds left to put the Swathers up by 11 at the half, 43-32.

SCA hit a couple outside shots early in the third quarter to get back within eight, but the Swathers pulled away late. A Landon Spencer trey just before the buzzer put Hesston up 64-40.

A Blake Martin three-point play with 4:02 to play set the running clock in motion.

Hesston plays Jan. 30 at home against Haven.

“We have Haven and Smoky Valley coming back,” Raleigh said. “Those are two tough teams. I want us to keep playing hard. We need to continue to play good defense. That’s what we pride ourselves on. We have a week to refine some things.”
