PREP BOYS

Canton-Galva Inv.

Moundridge 61, Bennington 40

CANTON — The Moundridge Wildcat boys jumped out to a 20-2 first-quarter lead, stopping top-seeded Bennington 61-40 Thursday in the semifinals of the Canton-Galva Invitational.

The Wildcats led 31-21 at the half and 45-36 after three quarters, putting things away with a 16-4 fourth quarter.

“Another good start put us in a position to play our tempo against a team that likes to get it and go,” Moundridge coach Vance Unrau said. “We withstood several Bennington runs, which I told the kids would happen. They are too good of a team with athletes and shooters. We took good shots within the offense and made free throws to put the game out of reach. We had a few too many untimely turnovers that allowed Bennington to close the gap to six but patience on offense, contesting shots and rebounding proved to be the winning formula again tonight. Play for the CG Tournament title tomorrow night.”

Moundridge went 20 of 33 from the field and 17 of 19 from the line. Bennington went 16 of 50 from the field and three of nine from the line.

Dillon Vogts led Moundridge with 20 points and 10 assists. Noah Eichelberger added 20 points. Brady Helms scored 16 points.

Bennington was led by J.J. Allen with 16 points.
